Dr. Mark Hartney

As a full-time physician in Tampa, Florida at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital (JAHVH),I practice medicine as the Director of the JAHVH Surgical Intensive Care Unit and a s Site Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine. My general surgery interests are in minimally invasive (i.e., robotic) surgery and novel point-of-care management efforts (e.g., AR-and AI-aided ultrasound). I educate, lecture and deliver annual grand rounds for physician assistant students, medical students, residents, and faculty. My medical school, residency, and fellowship were all based here at USF in Tampa, and I attended University of South Carolina prior. I also earned a Masters in Science in Healthcare Emergency Management from Boston University, which I put into use in 2020 when creating the Scarce Resource Allocation Team to comply with national ethics mandates during the pandemic. I am also faculty for the JAHVH Advanced Fellowship in Clinical Simulation and instruct at the USF HealthCenter for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in courses such as Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS)Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM), Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET). On the side, I have done paid product evaluations for materials in my field such as surgical meshes and procoagulant materials. My wife, Kim, is also Dr. Hartney; she practices psychosomatic medicine as Chief of Psychiatry at Tampa General Hospital and is also on faculty at USF. We have a boy and girl who will turn 8 and 6, respectively, right asthe2021-2022 school year starts up again. We have family in both Florida’s and California’s Bay Areas and plan to participate in person quarterly and remotely more often.
