The core function of the Band is executed by its membership. A typical angel only works on the rare deal that interests him or her. But with more than 100 members, the aggregate activity of the Band of Angels is akin to that of a typical VC. The Band examines more than 700 plans a year at some depth; selects 33 to present before the group as a whole (akin to a partners meeting at a VC firm), and generally invests in about 8 deals per year. A Band member usually joins the board and contributes value that extends well beyond the cash investment. For obvious reasons, a full list of Band members is confidential, but below are a few of the companies in which Band members have either founded, or in which they served as senior officers.
